Other Researchers

In the psychosomatic (mind causing ilnesses in body) field of medicine today, it is constantly emphasized that resentment, condemnation of others, remorse, and hostility are behind a host of maladies ranging from arthritis to cardiac disease. The stress caused by these negative emotions can directly affect the immune system of the body, leaving you open to infection and disease.

Many researchers have done great job in the treatment of psychosomatic disorders over the last century. However, the names mentioned below are the pioneers whose works had inspired Dr. Sanjoy Mukerji's research and development stupendously; especially, the first three.

Leslie M. LeCron (1892 - 1972), was a psychologist who made an immense research to tell us how illnesses develop and explained what causes them. Moreover, he also brought to light the various methods of communicating directly with our inner mind to find the causative factors of diseases.

According to him, in order to improve our illness it is of utmost importance to find out the source of the illness. We must consider the possibility of emotions in producing the illness. He firmly believes that a direct path to the inner mind, with insight into origins and causes of all illnesses, is the only real key to overcoming illnesses and to changing patterns of thinking.

He had emphatically said, “Too often a physician will treat only the symptom and not the cause. Drugs rarely will remove the causes which are buried deep within the inner mind.”

louiseLouise L. Hay, is called the closest thing to a living saint by the Australian media. Her years of research and her own cancer, which she cured herself, helped her to find out the mental causes for various physical illnesses.

She says, “I believe we create every so-called illness in our body. The body, like everything else in life, is a mirror of our inner thoughts and beliefs. The body is always talking to us, if we will only take the time to listen. Every cell within your body responds to every single thought you think and every word you speak. Continuous modes of thinking and speaking produce body behaviors and postures and “eases” or dis-eases.”

She found that resentment, criticism, guilt and fear cause more health problems than anything else.

She also says, “When clients come to me, no matter how dire their predicament seems to be, I KNOW if they are WILLING to do the mental work of releasing and forgiving, almost anything can be healed. The word incurable, which is so frightening to so many people, really only means that the particular condition cannot be cured by outer methods and that we must GO WITHIN to effect the healing. The condition came from nothing and will go back to nothing.”

It was a great joy for her when she first discovered the power in the words and thoughts that creates diseases. This new awareness brought her the understanding of the connection between thoughts and the different parts of the body and physical problems. She rightly says that we unknowingly create illnesses in ourselves. No doctor, no health practitioner can give us cure unless we choose to take part in our healing process.

dr. murphyDr. Joseph Murphy (1898 - 1981), Ph.D., D.D., was a world-renowned authority on mind dynamics. More than five decades ago he managed to cure himself of a malignancy; in medical terminology it is called a sarcoma, by using the healing power of his subconscious mind.

The following paragraphs are relevant extracts of what he had said regarding disease causation.

“If you think negatively, destructively, and viciously, these thoughts generate destructive emotions that must be expressed and must find an outlet. These emotions, being of a negative nature, are frequently expressed as ulcers, heart trouble, tension, and anxiety.”

“Nothing appears on your body except when the mental equivalent is first in your mind. As you change your mind by drenching it with incessant affirmatives, you change your body.”

“Worry, anxiety, fears and depression interfere with the normal functioning of the heart, lungs, stomach and intestines. The medical community is just beginning to appreciate how serious so-called stress-related diseases are. The reason is that these patterns of thought interfere with the harmonious functioning of your subconscious mind.”

Dr. Deepak Chopra
,
M.D., of Indian origin, has been proclaimed by Time Magazine (US edition) as one of the top 100 icons of the century. He continues to transform our understanding of the meaning of health.

He says, “We are the only creatures on earth who can change our biology by what we think and feel. Our cells are constantly eavesdropping on our thoughts and being changed by them. A bout of depression can wreak havoc with the immune system; falling in love can boost it. Despair and hopelessness raise the risk of heart attacks and cancer, thereby shortening life. Joy and fulfillment keep us healthy and extend life. This means that the line between biology and psychology can’t really be drawn with any certainty. A remembered stress, which is only a wisp of thought, releases the same flood of destructive hormones as the stress itself.”

He strongly believes that because the mind influences every cell in the body, human diseases and aging are changeable; they can speed up, slow down, stop for a time, and even reverse themselves.

He further says, “Things that made you suffer are imprinted there, along with things that brought you joy. Stresses you long ago forgot on the conscious level are still sending out signals, like buried microchips, making you anxious, tense, fatigued, apprehensive, resentful, doubtful, disappointed – these reactions cross the mind-body barrier to become part of you.

Dr. J. A. Winter, M.D., was a Man-hattan psychosomaticist; who not only explained why we get, stay and repeat our illnesses, but also explained how to overcome our illnesses.

He gave a six-point definition of a psychosomatic disease. However, to make it simpler, let us understand the three most important points:

  1. The disorder gives troublesome symptoms without any organ damage, although damage to the organ may occur later.
  2. It is based on some past experience, usually painful.
  3. It is based on fixed association - similar experiences will almost always trigger the symptoms of the disorder.

He had clearly said, "These illnesses seem to arise from problem-situations and from words, rather than from actual injuries or infection."

He further said, "Using the approach of psychotherapy (psychological treatment) will be helpful in these conditions. Certainly the conventional medical and surgical forms of treatment leave much to be desired, as any doctor will admit."

Psychosomatic Illnesses

Most illnesses falling under the following systems are classified as psychosomatic:

Respiratory system, digestive system, vascular system, endocrine system, nervous system, musculo-skeletal system, urinary system, reproductive system, genital, sexual and skin.

Even Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, cancer and so forth are also included.

Stress And Tension

Stress and tension may serve to lower bodily resistance so that we become more susceptible to even infectious diseases and in this sense it could be said that all illness has an emotional background.
